First responders were dispatched to a Park Avenue residence at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, when a neighbor saw smoke coming from a basement apartment and called the fire department.
Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Flynn said that one resident in the building was able to open the door to the basement apartment in an effort to assist an elderly resident, though he was pushed back by heavy smoke and unable to reach her. Fire crews worked quickly to get the woman out of the building, and she was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The fire was quickly extinguished shortly before 9:15 a.m. One firefighter suffered a minor injury, Flynn noted. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Yonkers Police Department has not released the name of the resident that died.
